Mom of Ethan and Sophie asked: I’m just curious…. I was told that it is more cost effective to keep the air conditioning on and only lower the temp when you are hot (only during the summer months, not winter). My husband wants to keep the A.C. off and only turn it on when we are hot. I think this doesn’t make sense b/c it seems like it would be harder on the unit to be starting up over and over. Which is more cost effective? Where can I find info on this so that I can show my husband (like statistics)? Thanks!

asked: Assume 90 deg F. outside. House is cool at 75 deg a/c setting. If the grand kids leave the door open for 5 minutes, how much heat is lost and how long does the A/C unit have to run (appx) to return to 75 deg inside?
Is there a rule of thumb to equate this loss to $$$ so I can communicate with the wife and kids? They complain that the a/c doesn’t cool but it’s fine when the kids are gone for the day. All else being constant. Thx anyone. My first time asking a Yahoo question. Hope I did it rite.
Thanks, Phillip. We have the unit serviced every spring/fall and its ok. I’m just trying to put the cost of leaving the doors open in terms of gummy bears or peanut butter cups so they will understand. Thx.

jdanae asked: We live in a fairly large home and only have an evaporative cooler(which is a brand new unit, less than 3 months old). This does not cool down the house at all and it is always 95+ degrees in our house. We have bought two small window air conditioners, but then we are confined to that small area (there are 5 of us with a 7month old). Does the landlord have to provide air that actully works to cool down the house? Or is what is provided okay?? We are all miserable, especially the baby!!!!
it is stated in the lease that air is provided, however, as stated, it doesn’t work with a darn!!!

Nina Lee asked: I appologize, in advance, I am clueless about this and probably not making much sense. I will try to explain the best I can.
I live in a 4 bedroom brick home that has a central A/C unit. The house was brand new when we purchased it; we’ve lived there for 3 years. There is a unit outside (compressor?) and a different unit in our garage (I don’t know what it’s called- it’s where the filter is located) and there are vents going from inside the house to the unit that is located in the garage.
The problem is that, just recently, when you are inside the house you can smell fumes from the gas can that’s located in the garage. I’m thinking this is NOT normal and wondering what the cause might be. You also get an ocassional whiff of the pesticides that are stored in the garage. It seems to be coming in through the vents that connect to the a/c unit in the garage? I’m pregnant so my nose is super sensitive and it’s starting to make me sick to be in my own home.
Any ideas?

snwboardnchic99 asked: I have a 2000 Honda Civic, and the air conditioning just stopped working on the way home. It was working perfectly, then suddenly it started blowing hot air. Not just “less cold” air, I mean HOT air (it was probably 95 degrees outside). The engine was not overheated. Honda wants to charge $90 for a diagnostics test, and if it’s going to cost more than a few hundred dollars to fix we probably won’t fix it.
Has anyone had a similar experience and can estimate what’s wrong and what it would cost? If you need any further details, I’ll check back! Thanks!

jd asked: The air conditioning unit in a reo home we are looking at is missing. Possibly the heating unit as well since many are now combined and this home was built in 2005. Will this home pass FHA inspection without the unit/s? And if not, is there any way the buyer can put in the unit and still get FHA financing. The seller is refusing to replace the unit.
I do want this home! The previous owners took care of it but when they left they took or sold parts of the house!
Things missing are the air conditioning unit, all kitchen appliances, pantry door, front door (replaced recently), gates to all the fencing( 5 total), water heater, and the landscaping bricks around the flowers!
I believe they had a huge sale before they left and sold anything that could be moved out!
I will have to look into the 203k loan because I know the home must also have a water heater that the seller is also refusing to replace.

pk asked: We will be on Royal Caribbean’s Majesty of the Sea. I’m used to setting our air conditioning at home at around 80 degrees in the summer, unless I’m exercising, & I’m comfortable.
I’m wondering about the temperature in the dining room, theatre, lounges, & other indoor public areas.
