the filter rack should be located between the return duct and the unit. if you dont know which side is what, basicly locate where the duct ends and the unit begins. it should be there. filters should be changed every 30 days.
The filter could be located in the cold air return – most likely located in a hall ceiling. We have changed the grill to one that hinges just so we could put a filter there to filter the dust before it even gets to the furnace. Furnaces have filters located inside the grill area – facing the furnace there will be (probably) and upper and lower panel with air vent openings – remove one or both to see where the filter is located – maybe inside along the side to filter the air that is being sucked from the cold air return. Get the better filters – not the cheapest. The unit will not run when the cover is removed so you won’t run the risk of torching your eyebrows – but you could turn the t-stat down so it won’t come on – you also have to replace the cover properly for the furnace to run once you are done.
If you go to your furnace you should see a large trunk of duct work going into the furnace. 90% of the time the filter is in a slot right between the duct work and the furnace. Occasionally some idiots install it inside the duct so you have to remove the duct from the furnace to get to it.
filter is only located at the air intake. change the filter often otherwise dust will blow back into the house.
